The Art of Roller Skating: An Exhibition by Debby Besford
GOOD NEWS! Documentary photographer, Debby Besford, has successfully received some funding from the Arts Council, England, to exhibit her 5-year photography project on
The Art of Roller Skating. The exhibition will take place at PRIMEYARC, Market Gates in Great Yarmouth, from March 4th – May 1st.
Debby says, as a teenager I was a competitive artistic roller skater and loved the sport.
The idea of taking the portraits of the skaters at home came from my own experiences as a teen skater, where my proud parents took photos of me poised in my skates with trophies clasped in hand. These documented moments mark a truly important chapter in my teenage life and one that I feel can now be celebrated further for the skaters in this project. My objective is to showcase this often forgotten sport with an original eye. Sadly, Artistic Roller Skating is often overshadowed by ice skating. The sport has many facets to it, from artistic figure and free skating to roller derby, hockey, disco, and street skating.
The exhibition is for everyone, there will be talks, costume making workshops, demonstrations by local artistic roller skaters, podcasts, and the chance to bring your own archival photos of you, your parents and relatives who use to skate in Great Yarmouth, which will go on display and be part of local people’s contributions, stories, including memorabilia, vintage skates, skating costumes, revealing the importance of roller skating and its cultural significance.
Opening hours: Wednesday-Saturday, 12 noon – 5pm, Sunday, 12 noon – 4pm
